Scouting Report

Joseph Russo hasn't played a varsity snap yet at New Jersey powerhouse St. Joseph Regional in Montvale, but he is already on the national radar.

A 6-foot-3, 285-pound freshman lineman, Russo was a starter on the freshman team, which finished 10-1 with the one loss being a one-point decision to Don Bosco Prep.

But the college coaches know who the Rockland NY resident is through social media, highlights and his size.

Russo, who just turned 14, has already been invited to camps by UConn and national powerhouse Ohio State. He also receives plenty of letters by Division 2 and 3 schools on a consistent basis.

"He is on the board at UConn and Ohio State,'' said Mike Russo, Joseph's father. "He went to their camps, and they keep in touch with me on his progress.''

Russo has visited a growth doctor, who projects him to be in the 6-5 to 6-6 range. And with a strong work ethic in the weight room, his weight is expected to expand as well.

Already, Russo has a 9-and-a-half-inch hand size and bench presses 245 pounds and squats 385. Russo also understand the importance of his academics, holding a 3.8 grade point average.

Aiming to be a multi-sport athlete, Russo has signed up for the wrestling team in the winter and plans to compete in track and field in the spring.

"Joe had a great freshman season,'' said Mike Russo. "Now it's a matter of getting back in the weight room and continuing to improve. The coaches believe he will receive plenty of scholarship offers.''

Russo comes from an athletic family. His father played baseball growing up in the Bronx, his older brother played baseball at Arizona State University and played minor league baseball with the Cubs organization. He has a 10-year-old brother who also plays football.

Scouting Report: ''Russo is quick, fast, and athletic for his size. He is projected to play left tackle on the offensive line because of his reach. He has the ability to stand his man up and follow his block until the whistle sounds''
